Product Description
This striking 19th century oil on canvas portrait depicts a distinguished gentleman with glasses, a neatly trimmed beard, and an austere expression, rendered with fine detail and naturalistic depth. The sitter is dressed in dark attire, typical of the period, and the background is kept sombre to emphasise the subject’s presence.
The painting is housed in its original gilt frame, richly decorated with floral and foliate mouldings. While showing areas of age-related wear and loss, particularly to the corners, the frame retains much of its grandeur and character. To the reverse, a label from Hugh Wilson & Son, Picture Frame Manufacturers, 17 Bath Street, Glasgow confirms its provenance and period authenticity. Hugh Wilson & Son were notable framemakers during the late 19th century, supplying many artists and collectors in Scotland.
Please note: The frame shows losses and wear consistent with age. The portrait itself remains in good antique condition.
